New Delhi: The Calcutta High Court-appointed inquiry committee into the communal violence that took place during protests against the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 in Murshidabad, West Bengal, has submitted its report. The report has made several shocking revelations. Serious questions have been raised about the inaction of local Trinamool Congress leaders and the police. A report by an inquiry committee formed by the Calcutta High Court has said that a leader of the state's ruling Trinamool Congress was involved in the violence that took place during protests against the Waqf Amendment Bill in many areas of Murshidabad, Bengal last month. The attack was carried out on the orders of local councilor Mehboob Alam. The local police was completely inactive. The police administration was absent at the scene. The report said that Hindus were targeted in the violence. When the distressed people sought help, the police did not respond. The report has been submitted before the Division Bench of the High Court. The members of the committee visited the villages. They spoke to the victims of the violence. The investigation team included members of the National Human Rights Commission, the State Legal Services Authority and the Judicial Service. It is to inform you that three people died in the violence, while many were injured.
The report also mentions arson and looting and the continuous destruction of shops. The main attack took place on Friday, April 11, after 2.30 pm. When local councilor Mehboob Alam arrived with the rioters. The miscreants had come with their faces covered. Local leader Amirul Islam saw which houses were not attacked and then the attackers set them on fire. The attackers had cut the water connection, so the fire could not be extinguished. The report also said that 113 houses in Betbona village were the worst affected.
On April 12, a Hindu man and his son were killed by some members of the Muslim community. In the ensuing violence, shops and markets in the area were vandalized. Grocery stores, hardware stores, clothing stores, etc. were set on fire. The report said that 29 shops were damaged in Ghoshpada. Temples were also vandalized. All these took place within 300 meters of the local police station, the report said.
